How Babies Learn Cause And Effect
Repeated actions with reliable results teach infants that their own movements change the world, and that discovery underpins much of what looks like mischief.

A baby dropping a spoon for the fifteenth time is running an experiment. The understanding being built is that their own actions produce predictable consequences.
Accidental discovery comes first
Early movements are largely undirected, and results happen by chance. A flailing arm strikes a hanging toy, the toy moves, and the baby notices the coincidence.
Repetition of the movement follows, initially imprecise. The baby is testing whether the result recurs, which is the minimum requirement for detecting a causal relationship.
Over weeks the movement becomes targeted, and the baby produces the effect deliberately. The shift from accident to intention is visible in how the arm travels.
Reliability is what teaches
An effect that follows the action every time is learned quickly, while an intermittent one takes far longer and is held less confidently. Consistency carries the information.
Timing matters as much as consistency. A consequence arriving immediately is linked to the action; one arriving several seconds later usually is not.
This is why simple toys with instant, invariable responses hold attention. Complex toys with delayed or random reactions obscure the relationship the baby is trying to detect.
Why dropping things is a study
Releasing an object involves voluntary control that arrives relatively late, so dropping is a newly available skill being practised. The falling itself is the interesting part.
Babies vary the conditions, dropping from different heights and onto different surfaces, and watch each result. The variation is what distinguishes investigation from repetition.
The adult who returns the object is part of the experiment too. A social consequence is being tested alongside the physical one.
Contingency in social interaction
The same learning applies to people. A baby who vocalises and receives a response learns that sounds produce attention, which is the foundation of conversational turn-taking.
Responsive interaction, where an adult reacts promptly and in kind, teaches this more effectively than input that arrives regardless of what the baby does. Contingency is the active ingredient.
Video and audio cannot supply it, since a recording cannot respond to a particular baby at a particular moment. This is a substantial part of why screens teach little in infancy.
Where this shows up as behaviour
Switch flicking, button pressing, banging and emptying containers are all the same investigation applied to new objects. What looks like mischief is usually a demonstration of cause and effect.
Once mobility arrives, the range of testable objects expands abruptly, which is why household safety measures need to be in place before crawling rather than after.
A baby who shows little interest in the effects of their own actions, or who does not vary their attempts, is worth mentioning to a health visitor alongside other observations.
