How Car Seats Are Crash Tested
Federal testing puts child restraints on a sled that reproduces a frontal collision, and the limits of that single test explain much of the advice around seat use.

Every child restraint sold in the United States is certified against a federal standard built around one crash scenario. Knowing what that test measures, and what it leaves out, clarifies a great deal of the surrounding guidance.
What the test actually does
Restraints are mounted on a standard bench on a sled and subjected to an acceleration pulse that reproduces the forces of a frontal collision at a specified severity.
Instrumented dummies representing children of defined sizes ride in the restraint, recording head and chest measurements along with how far the head moves forward.
The restraint passes if those measurements stay within limits, if the dummy remains within defined boundaries and if the structure holds without the specified failures.
Why a single scenario is used
A uniform test allows products to be compared and certified consistently, which would be impossible if each manufacturer selected its own crash conditions.
Frontal impacts were chosen because they are common and because the forces involved are severe, making them a demanding benchmark for restraint design.
Certification is therefore a pass mark against a defined scenario, not a ranking. All certified seats meet the same requirement, which is why price does not indicate safety performance.
What the standard assumes
The test uses correct installation on a standard bench, with the restraint attached exactly as specified. Nothing in it addresses a seat installed loosely or at the wrong angle.
It also assumes an unmodified product: no aftermarket inserts, covers or strap pads that were not tested with the restraint they are added to.
This is the reason so much emphasis falls on installation and on manufacturer instructions. The certification describes the tested configuration only.
Why vehicles complicate it
Real vehicle seats differ in cushion angle, contour, belt geometry and anchor placement, none of which match the standard bench exactly.
A restraint that installs securely in one vehicle can prove difficult in another, which is a fit problem rather than a defect in either product.
Both the restraint manual and the vehicle owner's manual carry instructions that apply to that pairing, and they are the governing documents for a particular installation.
Where the limits of testing show
Side impacts, rear impacts and rollovers are not covered by the same federal frontal requirement, though manufacturers may conduct additional testing of their own.
Testing also covers defined dummy sizes, which is part of why restraints carry height and weight ranges rather than age ranges alone.
Questions about a specific seat, vehicle or installation are handled by certified child passenger safety technicians, who inspect the actual setup rather than reasoning from a standard.
