How Motor Development Spreads From Head To Toe
Infants gain control of the head before the trunk and the trunk before the legs, an ordering that follows nervous system maturation and explains why milestones stack.

Motor skills appear in a consistent order across infants, moving from the head downward and from the center of the body outward. The pattern reflects how the nervous system matures.
The two directions
Head control precedes trunk control, which precedes control of the hips and legs. This top-down sequence is described as cephalocaudal development.
A second direction runs from the midline outward: shoulder and upper arm control arrives before elbow and wrist control, which arrives before fine finger movement.
Both directions describe ordering rather than timing. The sequence is highly consistent; the ages at which each step arrives vary considerably between healthy infants.
What is maturing underneath
Nerve fibers gain a fatty insulating sheath over the early years, and signals travel faster and more reliably along insulated fibers than uninsulated ones.
That insulation progresses in a roughly head-to-toe order, so the pathways controlling neck and shoulder muscles become efficient before those reaching the legs.
Muscle bulk and bone strength develop alongside, but the limiting factor early on is control rather than strength, which is why practice changes performance so quickly.
Why each skill needs the one below it
Sitting requires a trunk that can hold position against gravity, which requires head control so the load above the trunk is stable rather than swinging.
Standing requires hip control layered on trunk control, and walking adds the harder problem of controlling the body while one leg is off the ground.
This dependency is why skills appear stacked. A stage that looks like a plateau is often the period in which the foundation for the next skill is being laid.
Where the outward direction shows
Early reaching uses the whole arm swinging from the shoulder, because that joint is under control before the ones further out.
As elbow and wrist control arrive, reaching becomes shorter and more accurate, and the hand starts arriving in a useful orientation rather than being turned after contact.
Finger control comes last, which is why picking up small items appears months after picking up large ones.
What varies and what does not
Timing varies with opportunity to move, with body proportions and with temperament, since a cautious infant may practice a skill privately before performing it.
Order varies far less. A departure from the usual sequence, or a strong asymmetry between the two sides, is more informative than a milestone arriving late.
Those are observations to bring to the pediatrician, who can examine muscle tone and movement patterns rather than working from a description alone.
