What A Newborn Can See And Hear
A newborn's vision is blurry beyond a short range while hearing is already sharp and tuned to voices, and the mismatch shapes how babies respond to people.

Newborn senses are not simply weaker versions of adult ones. Vision and hearing arrive at very different stages of readiness, and that difference explains a lot of early behaviour.
Vision starts short and low contrast
A newborn's eyes focus best at a range of roughly the distance from the breast to a parent's face. Objects much closer or further are blurred.
The retina's central area, responsible for fine detail, is still immature, so acuity is poor. Strong contrast is far more visible than fine pattern, which is why bold shapes attract attention and pastels do not.
Colour discrimination is limited at first and develops over the following months. Early preference is for edges and boundaries rather than hue.
Eye control lags behind eye function
Newborns can see more than they can look at. The muscles that aim both eyes together are not yet coordinated, so eyes drift or cross intermittently in the early weeks.
Tracking a slowly moving object develops over the first couple of months, initially in short jerky movements. Smooth following comes later.
Persistent crossing beyond the early months, an eye that turns constantly, or a white reflection in the pupil needs prompt assessment rather than waiting for a routine check.
Hearing is working before birth
The structures of the inner ear are functional well before delivery, and the fetus hears sound conducted through the mother's body. Low frequencies carry best through tissue and fluid.
Newborns show recognition of their mother's voice and of the rhythmic patterns of the language they were surrounded by. This is a prenatal exposure effect, not learning after birth.
They also discriminate speech sounds across many languages initially, narrowing over the first year to the ones that matter in their own. The narrowing is a specialisation, not a loss.
Why voices work better than toys
The combination of clear hearing and blurry near vision makes a face at feeding distance, talking, close to an ideal stimulus. Sound locates it and contrast defines it.
The exaggerated pitch and slow rhythm adults naturally use with babies fit the frequency range and timing that infants attend to best. It is a shared behaviour across cultures.
Elaborate high-contrast toys are unnecessary against this background. A face is already the most interesting available object.
Screening and what it catches
Newborn hearing screening measures the ear's response to sound electronically and does not require any cooperation from the baby. It is done in the first weeks.
Early detection matters because language development depends on hearing during a specific window. A delayed diagnosis costs developmental time that is hard to recover.
Vision is checked by examination rather than by a formal screen. Any parental concern about how a baby looks at things is worth raising with a health visitor or doctor directly.
