Why Depth Perception Takes Months To Arrive
Judging distance requires two eyes working as a pair, and the brain circuitry that compares their images has to be built through experience during the first months.

Newborns see, but they do not see in depth the way an adult does. Judging distance depends on machinery that is assembled during the first months rather than delivered at birth.
What two eyes contribute
Eyes set apart in the face receive slightly different images of the same scene, and the size of that difference varies with how far away an object is.
Comparing the two images is a computation, and it happens in visual areas of the brain that receive input from both eyes at once.
Those binocular cells are not fully functional at birth. They are tuned by experience, which means the system needs matched input from both eyes to develop.
Why alignment matters so much
If the eyes do not point at the same target, the two images cannot be fused, and the comparison the brain needs is unavailable.
Newborn eye movements are frequently uncoordinated in the first weeks as control develops, which is ordinary. Persistent misalignment past that period is treated differently.
This is why eye alignment is checked at well-child visits. A pediatrician assesses whether what a parent notices falls inside the expected pattern.
The cues that do not need two eyes
Depth is also conveyed by cues available to a single eye: objects that block others are nearer, familiar objects appear smaller with distance, and closer things move faster across the visual field.
These pictorial cues come online later than binocular depth in infancy, because they rely on knowledge about objects that a baby is still accumulating.
Motion is the earliest of them to matter, which is part of why moving objects hold an infant's attention more reliably than still ones.
How reaching reveals the change
Early reaching is inaccurate, with a baby swiping toward a target and correcting as the hand goes. Distance is estimated poorly and adjusted on the fly.
As depth information improves, reaches become pre-shaped, with the hand opening to match the object before contact rather than after it.
That change is a behavioral marker for a perceptual one, which is why researchers study reaching to study seeing.
Why the window is worth knowing about
Binocular circuitry develops through use, so conditions that keep one eye from contributing clear images during infancy can affect the system's development.
This is the reasoning behind routine vision checks in the first years and behind prompt evaluation of anything that blocks or blurs vision in one eye.
Whether a specific observation warrants attention is a question for the pediatrician, who can look and decide whether an eye specialist should be involved.
