Why Development Comes In Bursts And Plateaus
Skills appear suddenly after long quiet periods because the underlying groundwork is invisible, and progress in one area often pauses while another advances.

Development rarely looks like a steady climb. Long stretches of apparent stasis are followed by a week in which several things change at once, and the pattern has explanations.
The groundwork is not visible
A skill like walking requires strength, balance, confidence and coordination to reach adequate levels simultaneously. Each builds gradually, and none produces a visible result alone.
Progress only becomes observable when the last component crosses a threshold. Weeks of unseen accumulation then appear as a sudden arrival.
This is why babies often stand holding furniture for a long period and then walk within days. The waiting was not idleness.
Systems compete for capacity
Babies working intensively on a motor skill frequently pause in language, and vice versa. Attention and practice time are finite, and effort concentrates.
Parents commonly report a baby who stopped babbling while learning to crawl and resumed afterwards with more words than before. The pause was reallocation, not regression.
Because of this, a plateau in one domain is only meaningful in the context of what else is happening. Isolated observation is misleading.
Practice looks like obsession
A baby working on a new skill repeats it relentlessly, often at the expense of everything else, including sleep and interest in food. The repetition is how the movement becomes automatic.
Once automatic, the skill stops being interesting and attention moves elsewhere. The abrupt loss of interest is the sign that consolidation has finished.
Sleep disruption around new skills is well described by parents, and coincides with periods of rapid change. Explanations vary but the association is consistent.
Why milestone ages are ranges
Published milestone ages describe when most children achieve something, spanning a wide window rather than naming a date. A baby at either edge may be entirely typical.
The order of skills is generally more informative than the timing, since sequences are more consistent across children than schedules are.
Premature babies are assessed against their corrected age for the first couple of years, which shifts expectations accordingly and is standard practice.
What actually warrants attention
Loss of a skill that was previously established is the signal that carries most weight. Plateaus are common; going backwards is not.
Persistent asymmetry, such as consistently using one hand or one side of the body, matters at an age when a clear hand preference is not expected.
Concerns across several areas at once, or a baby who is not progressing at all over a long period, should be discussed with a health visitor or doctor rather than watched further.
