How A Baby's Body Clock Develops
Newborns have no day-night rhythm because the internal clock is not yet synchronised, and light, feeding and routine gradually anchor it over the first months.

Newborns sleep in scattered blocks around the clock, and no amount of technique changes that in the first weeks. The underlying rhythm has not yet been established.
The clock exists but is not set
A small region of the brain acts as a master clock, running on a cycle close to but not exactly twenty-four hours. It requires external signals to be pulled into alignment each day.
In the womb the fetus is synchronised passively by the mother's hormones and activity. Birth removes that reference, and the baby must acquire its own.
Until then, sleep is distributed according to feeding need and the sleep pressure that builds while awake, with no time-of-day component at all.
Light is the strongest signal
Specialised cells in the retina detect overall light level and feed directly to the clock, independently of vision. Bright light in the morning advances the clock and light late in the evening delays it.
Blue-weighted daylight is a far stronger signal than indoor lighting, which is why time outside in the morning affects rhythm more than lamps do.
Over the first months, consistent bright days and dark nights produce measurable consolidation of sleep into the night portion.
Melatonin arrives on its own schedule
Melatonin, the hormone that signals biological night, is not produced in meaningful quantities by newborns. What they receive initially comes through breast milk, which carries the mother's daily pattern.
The baby's own production begins over the first months and strengthens through the first year. Its arrival coincides with the period when nights typically begin to lengthen.
Bright light in the evening suppresses melatonin release, which is the mechanism behind advice about dim lighting and screens before bed.
Other signals that anchor the day
Feeding times, social interaction, noise and temperature all contribute, though more weakly than light. A predictable sequence of daily events supports the same alignment.
This is why keeping night feeds quiet, dim and undramatic while making daytime feeds bright and interactive is commonly advised. It supplies a contrast the clock can read.
Consistency matters more than the specific times chosen. A varying schedule provides a weaker signal than a regular one, whatever the hours.
What this does and does not fix
An established rhythm produces longer night sleep, but it does not remove night waking, which has separate causes including hunger and normal arousals between sleep cycles.
Babies still wake at night long after their rhythm is settled, and this is expected rather than a failure of routine.
Extreme sleepiness, difficulty rousing for feeds, or a baby who never settles at all are not rhythm problems and need assessment by a health visitor or doctor.
