Why Baby Sleep Cycles Are So Short
Infants move through sleep stages far faster than adults and surface to near-waking frequently, which explains much of what parents experience as unpredictable nights.

Adults cycle through sleep stages over roughly ninety minutes. Babies do it in around half that, and the difference accounts for a large share of night waking.
The structure of a cycle
Sleep alternates between deep, quiet sleep and a lighter, active stage in which the brain is highly engaged. Each cycle passes through both and ends near the surface.
At the end of every cycle, a sleeper briefly approaches waking. Adults usually turn over and continue without any memory of it.
Babies pass this point roughly twice as often across a night, which multiplies the number of opportunities for a full waking.
Active sleep dominates early on
Newborns spend around half their sleep in the active stage, compared with a much smaller fraction in adults. The proportion falls over the first year.
Active sleep is visibly noisy. Babies twitch, grimace, make sounds, move their eyes under the lids and breathe irregularly, all while genuinely asleep.
Parents frequently intervene during this stage, believing the baby is waking. Picking up a baby in active sleep often produces the waking that was being prevented.
Why so much of it exists
Active sleep is associated with high brain activity, and it is most abundant when the brain is developing fastest. Premature babies show an even larger proportion.
The prevailing explanation is that this stage supports the development of neural connections, effectively generating internal stimulation. The detail remains debated.
Its decline over the first years parallels the slowing of that developmental period, which is the main evidence for the link.
Entering sleep differently
Newborns typically enter sleep through the active stage rather than dropping straight into deep sleep as adults do. This is why a newly asleep newborn wakes so readily when moved.
Waiting until the movement and irregular breathing subside means waiting for deep sleep, which is why the delay before transferring a baby to a cot makes a practical difference.
The order reverses over the first months, so older babies fall into deeper sleep more directly and can be moved sooner.
What follows for night waking
A baby surfacing between cycles will resettle or not depending on whether the conditions match those they fell asleep in. A changed environment prompts a fuller waking.
This is the mechanism behind sleep associations, and it explains why a baby fed to sleep often wakes seeking the same thing at each surfacing.
Persistent noisy breathing, long pauses in breathing, or a baby who is unusually difficult to rouse are not normal cycle features and should be assessed by a doctor.
